“You will no longer celebrate,
oppressed 1 virgin daughter Sidon!
Get up, travel to Cyprus,
but you will find no relief there.” 2
Yesaya 44:2
Konteks44:2 This is what the Lord, the one who made you, says –
the one who formed you in the womb and helps you:
“Don’t be afraid, my servant Jacob,
Jeshurun, 3 whom I have chosen!
Yesaya 46:3
Konteks46:3 “Listen to me, O family of Jacob, 4
all you who are left from the family of Israel, 5
you who have been carried from birth, 6
you who have been supported from the time you left the womb. 7
Yesaya 51:7
Konteks51:7 Listen to me, you who know what is right,
you people who are aware of my law! 8
Don’t be afraid of the insults of men;
don’t be discouraged because of their abuse!
Yesaya 40:9
Konteks40:9 Go up on a high mountain, O herald Zion!
Shout out loudly, O herald Jerusalem! 9
Shout, don’t be afraid!
Say to the towns of Judah,
“Here is your God!”
[23:12] 1 tn Or “violated, raped,” the point being that Daughter Sidon has lost her virginity in the most brutal manner possible.
[23:12] 2 tn Heb “[to the] Kittim, get up, cross over; even there there will be no rest for you.” On “Kittim” see the note on “Cyprus” at v. 1.
[44:2] 3 sn Jeshurun is a poetic name for Israel; it occurs here and in Deut 32:15; 33:5, 26.
[46:3] 4 tn Heb “house of Jacob”; TEV “descendants of Jacob.”
[46:3] 5 tn Heb “and all the remnant of the house of Israel.”
[46:3] 6 tn Heb “from the womb” (so NRSV); KJV “from the belly”; NAB “from your infancy.”
[46:3] 7 tn Heb “who have been lifted up from the womb.”
[51:7] 8 tn Heb “people (who have) my law in their heart.”
[40:9] 9 tn The second feminine singular imperatives are addressed to personified Zion/Jerusalem, who is here told to ascend a high hill and proclaim the good news of the Lord’s return to the other towns of Judah. Isa 41:27 and 52:7 speak of a herald sent to Zion, but the masculine singular form מְבַשֵּׂר (mÿvaser) is used in these verses, in contrast to the feminine singular form מְבַשֶּׂרֶת (mÿvaseret) employed in 40:9, where Zion is addressed as a herald.
